Job Description:



Our Transmission business is looking for an experienced civil design engineer to join our growing team in Manchester. We’re looking for someone who’s personable and likes to work collaboratively.

Your profile

  • The role surpasses the standard requirements of a civil / structural engineer and is a necessity to service other design disciplines
  •  A working knowledge of M&E design concepts, principles and associated coordination
  •  Experience working with / for a civil / structural design consultancy
  •  Significant experience of both civil and structural design together with a broad architecturalknowledge
  •  Earthworks design and a working knowledge of the Specification for Highway Works
  •  Strong experience in using computational frame design software (Masterseries, Tedds, STAD-Pro, etc.)
  • Ability to read and understand drainage impact assessments (useful), geotechnical reports - desktop, intrusive & interpretive
  •  Ability to review calculations provided by others and determine whether the level of information provided is appropriate, relevant, and the design is economical. Such activities may require a forensic review of hand calculations and output from computer design packages
  • An understanding of planning consents and technical support / management of third parties to ensure the requirements are met.
  • Extensive experience with multidisciplinary projects (e.g., energy from waste, petrochemical, water)
  •  Good technical knowledge in all areas
  •  Working knowledge of British and European codes of practice and building regulations
  •  An understanding of how design activities are scheduled and coordinated with other disciplines and milestones
  • An understanding of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 and its enabling legislation is essential
  •  The applicant must be able to communicate clearly with external design consultants and manage timescales and scope
  • Ability to deal with clients effectively
  • Qualifications in design, engineering, or construction
  • A Chartered Engineer or equivalent experience is required
  •  An understanding of fire design and concepts related to the preservation of life and the protection of assets
  • Responsibilities
  •  Integrated designand design coordination from Commercial Transfer to Practical Completion of numerous consecutive electrical infrastructure projects (Grid Access Substations and HVDC Converter Stations).
  •  Provide technical support to the procurement and construction teams.
  •  Producing designs using a combination of hand calculations, spreadsheets, and computer software.
  • Check the efforts of other designers (internal and external).
  • Ensure that information produced by third-party consultants meets the specifications of the contract and is developed to provide an appropriate solution (procurement time, buildability, timely construction, considering CDM regulations).
  • Working knowledge of the 2015 Construction (Design & Management) Regulations. Candidates should be aware of the duties and obligations that may fall on them as a result of undertaking designs outside the United Kingdom Make sure the design output matches the design inputs (collated and compiled by you)
  •  Interact with other disciplines and develop scoping documents - collaborative work.
  •  Manage scope of works documents and design tender packages.
  •  Review the contents of each design package with the designer and make sure the interfaces with other design disciplines are in order.
  •  Assist in the planning of design tasks in accordance with procurement and construction strategies.
  •  Monitoring of the performance of the design progress, quality against objectives and take all required actions.
  •  Participate / lead design reviews
  • Communicate with internal designers, clients, consulting firms, and the project team.
  •  Scoping technical needs and deliverables
  •  Contributing to and continuously reviewing a design schedule to ensure timely delivery of proposals.
  • Oversee and coordinate building services.
  • Identifying when a design proposal will be subject to Building Regulations and ensuring that the regulations are applied correctly are part of the technical solution.
  •  Implementing, quantifying, and recording change management for design activities that will affect budget and schedule.
  • Site visits to identify constraints on new developments and resolve issues which may be faced during construction.
