A research opportunity is currently available with the Neurological Devices Laboratory, in the Division of Biomedical Physics (DBP), within the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration is located in Silver Spring, Maryland. This study examines the effects of electromagnetic waves on the brain (including microwaves and ultrasounds). The participant will learn about simulation of microwave and ultrasound waves in brain tissues, fabrication, calibration, and operation of microwave and ultrasound devices, and bench and tissue testing of microwave and ultrasound energy distribution. Mentors from three laboratories will supervise the participant (Neurological Devices Lab, Electromagnetic Lab, and Ultrasound Lab) within the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Under an interagency agreement between the DOE and FDA, the DOE manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. Appointments are initially for six to twelve months, but may be renewed upon FDA recommendation, subject to availability of funds. Participants will receive a stipend commensurate with their educational level and experience. Participants in this program must provide proof of health insurance. The position can be full-time or part-time (20-39 hours per week) at FDA in Silver Spring, Maryland. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment benefits. Applicants must successfully complete a background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management in order to be on boarded at FDA. An OPM background investigation can only be conducted for individuals, including non-US citizens, who have resided in the US for a total of three of the past five years. FDA requires ORISE participants to read and sign their FDA Education and Training Agreement within 30 days of their start date, setting forth the conditions and expectations for his/her educational appointment at the agency. 

This agreement covers such topics as the following:
  • The appointment is non-employee in nature;
  • ORISE Fellows are forbidden to perform inherently governmental functions;
  • Fellows should convey all necessary rights to the FDA with regard to intellectual property conceived or first reduced to practice during their fellowship;
  • Research materials and laboratory notebooks belong to the FDA;
  • ORISE fellows are required to protect and not use or disclose non-public information.
Qualifications:
  • The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of August 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills:
  • Experience with electromagnetic field simulation
  • Hands-on experience with electromagnetic and/or ultrasound devices
  • Knowledge of electromagnetics and/or ultrasound
