Description:
Research in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) department at Carnegie Mellon University spans the range from science and theoretical work through medical technologies and devices along the entire clinical translational spectrum. Research at Carnegie Mellon is based on interdisciplinary synergistic interactions, facilitated by a strong collaborative culture and supported by our Research Partners. The Micro & Nano Integrated Biosystems (MINIBio) research laboratory directed by Dr. Saying Zhen at CMU is seeking a postdoctoral research associate. By performing independent experiments and/or advising research, you will develop novel nanomaterial-integrated micro devices for enriching extracellular vesicles, viruses, and other nanoscale biologicals. A candidate for this position must be knowledgeable in clinical cancer research, immunology, device development, micro- and nanofabrication, and nanomaterial synthesis. Tasks in this position may include coordinating and executing experiments with extracellular vesicles/viruses in highly engineered and customized micro devices, developing, building, and utilizing advanced micro/nanofabrication techniques including chemical vapor deposition and other nanomaterial synthesis systems, developing research methodology and protocols, writing grant proposals and reports, and handling laboratory safety responsibilities.
Core responsibilities include:
- Research experiments using clinical plasma samples and cell samples in micro devices as determined by the department and principal investigator
- Collect results and analyze via various imaging techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and optical microscopy, and molecular biology techniques, including PCR, DdPCR, gel electrophoresis, fluorometry, and spectroscopy, to determine device performance and pertinent clinical information.
- To support ongoing research, periodicals/literature searches are conducted
- Prepare scientific journal articles and presentations for publication.
- Obtain funding through regional and national funding agencies by preparing grant proposals and grant reports
- Maintaining molecular biology equipment and nanomaterial synthesis equipment, ordering research supplies, and collaborating with campus collaborators to comply with university safety guidelines and requirements
- Offering mentoring and research guidance to undergraduates and graduates

Qualifications:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering or related engineering field required
- Hand-on experience in conventional silicon-based micro/nanofabrication and synthesis of carbon nanomaterial's
Preferred Qualifications:
- Comprehensive skills in developing, using, and optimizing biomedical-specific micro devices for use in extracellular vesicles and/or virus enrichment.
- Experience in working in a Class 1000 and/or Class 100 cleanroom with micro- and Nano-fabrication, especially in photolithography, metal and polymer deposition, metal and silica etching, and liftoff
- Experience with developing, operating, and troubleshooting chemical vapor deposition systems
- Experience with soft lithography specifically in device development
- Qualitative analysis of SEM, AFM, and optical microscopy on platforms such as Image, Igor, and Gwyddion
- Interdisciplinary research laboratories require detail-oriented management skills
