Job description

A range of activities and services will be provided across the University of Chester's Warrington sites, as well as Mariss House in Birkenhead and other Chester sites as required. You will provide a comprehensive service to our students at these sites, including first-line advice and signposting, supporting student societies, and coordinating fun and engaging events throughout the year, including Freshers and Welcome Week. Our Student Opportunities team covers all of our campuses, so you'll find lots of support and opportunities for peer learning and sharing. (Please note that a driving license and your own vehicle are essential for this position, as you will be required to travel frequently, and public transport does not offer all the connections you require.)

Responsibilities:
  • Under the direction of the Director of Student Opportunities
  • Responsible for students, staff, and volunteers
  • Position: Warrington, with the expectation of commuting regularly to satellite sites throughout the Northwest
  • Students across UoC Warrington and other satellite sites across the NW, including Marriss House in Birkenhead and other University of Chester sites as required, are engaged and supported by this office, which includes providing first-line advice and signposting, democratic engagement, student societies and events.
  • A permanent 37-hour schedule is required
  • The National Union of Students (NUS) is the umbrella organization for the elected officers, student volunteers, University of Chester staff, and CSU employees.
The successful candidate will join an organization that was recently shortlisted for the Educate North Award for Students' Union of the Year. We have completed the work on our new strategic plan, which sets out our commitment to develop both the quality and quantity of our engagement with a greater breadth of inclusive activity and an increased presence at social events beyond the Exton Park (Parkgate Road) Chester site. Our new Strategic Plan can be found here.

Key Responsibilities

Events and Opportunities
  • Support the development of new student societies, as well as the running of existing societies in order to increase both the number of student societies and their levels of engagement
  • Mentoring and coaching student volunteers (e.g. society committees) as required by their roles
  • Coordinate Freshers' and Refresher's activities on your campuses, ensuring that students are welcomed and have a chance to make friends
  • The activities you undertake must conform to the SU's policies and procedures, including health and safety requirements.
  • Keep up-to-date information on all systems and the CSU website relevant to your sites.
  • Manage large-scale events, including the End of Year Ball and the Society Awards, with the Student Opportunities Team.
  • Ensure your student communications plan is relevant and effective by working closely with the Marketing team
Advice
  • Providing first-line advice and support to students regarding finance, disciplinary processes, and academic appeals
  • Referring students to other services such as University wellbeing services, CSU advice team, etc., and encouraging them to complete required paperwork first
Democracy and Representation
  • Build engagement with CSU democratic activity by holding sabbatical officer elections annually
  • As soon as election season begins, build awareness and visibility on your sites about the SU and sabbatical officers' role to attract candidates to run
  • Develop awareness and understanding of the CSU academic and student experience representation scheme (SERs) across your sites and promote roles and elections throughout the year
  • Providing regular feedback on engagement on your website to the VP Warrington where the delivery of their objectives is relevant
  • Develop student networks that increase and diversify our engagement with your sites
Stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain relationships with businesses near your locations in order to support commercial partnerships
  • Maintain strong working relationships with relevant colleagues at the University of Chester, particularly those at Warrington and satellite sites
General
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders within the University and with external stakeholders and organizations that provide support/services to students
  • All work must be conducted in accordance with the Union constitution, policies, procedures, and laws
