My Story, exactly happened to me!
Today I have gone through a horrifying experience and just got saved from a major scam.
I got a call @ 4:30 PM from (8882422100) person said he is a investigating officer at CIC and gave his batch ID and case no. in regard to which he called me. He told me to log on CIC web site and contact us section told me to check the no.. Same above no. was mentioned in CIC website from which I got the call. He told me that "your identity has been used for terror funding and Toronto police have arrest warrant against you. But since you are a new immigrant case goes through a CIC's investigation officer". He told me the rules and regulations that I cannot call, text or use internet for 1-2 hours until police reachs at my place. He mentioned my exact address. Then told me to read certain sections at the CIC website to make me aware about law and my rights during the case investigation is on. Meanwhile I was getting another call on cell, I told the CIC officer that I am getting call from 416-808-3200 (at this time I was hell scared, although I haven't done anything wrong but since I use public internet at Toronto library, I thought there may be a possibility of my identity theft since I use my laptop there which have softcopies of all my important documents). He told me to just Google the number and check whose no. it is I just googled and it showed it's call from Toronto police 32 division. CIC officer told me to take call from that no. and tell the police officer that you are in the investigation process with CIC officer and give his batch id. I received the that call..police officer from his driving car with his siren on was talking and verifying my details. He already had my address , he told me about the case that my identity was used for terror funding and I need to cooperate with police with this investigation. Police officer on call told me since they have arrest warrant against me right now they need to arrest me within one hour.(meanwhile I was continuously saying I have not anything illegal and ready to cooperate) He told me that either I should do a lawyer/counsel to send us hold the arrest or they need to arrest me within an hour. He told me to get back in call with CIC officer he will guide me what steps I need to take. As I disconnected the call, instantly I got call from CIC officer again. He asked me about my conversation with police officer. He then direct me to the page in CIC website again told me to read few more sections where it was mentioned that I have a right to get Lawyer/counsel and all the fees paid to the government lawyer in such cases will be refunded if you are proved innocent. CIC officer then told me that he has arranged me a lawyer but I need to first pay his fees which is $1200 public, he told me government lawyer don't take case until they first get their fees(Now at this time I became a bit sceptical about whole thing). But then again I got call from Toronto police no. and officer told me that he reached near my home and still don't have anything from my lawyer. He gave me another 30 mins or he need to come and arrest me. (At this time I was not sure what to do, I was sceptical about all this but both no.s from which I was getting call were authentic and I don't wanted to get arrested even though I knew I haven't done anything wrong, I was in doubt that may be someone stole my identity and it is actually used for illegal activity.) As I disconnected call with police officer, again CIC officer called me and gave me address where I need to submit the lawyer's fee , it 2555 Victoria Park Ave. He told me to book cab and get there and stay on call with him.(now at this stage, I got the feeling that it's fake, but again I was thinking I m getting calls from authentic no.s ) Meanwhile I was traveling to the given address my wife called 911 and explained the incidence happening with but 911 didn't entertained her they told her that 911 is only for life-n-death matters for everything else call to nearest police station and officer from 911 gave same no. 416-808-3200 to my wife as Toronto police's contact. I was again convinced that am actually into trouble. I reached the address with the cash as instructed by the CIC officer on the call the address was of a "Express Convenience" store he told be to find the yellow ATM in which I need to submit the cash, meanwhile he sent me QR code address on mail. When I found that yellow machine it was a Bitcoin transaction machine, I was again having doubts that all this is fake which government agency tells to send money via bitcoin but then again I was getting calls from authentic no.s. Then miracle happened, Owner of the store came to me as God's angel. He asked me is someone telling you on call to send money through Bitcoin machine , I replied yes, he told me it's fake just cut the call. I disconnected the call and shared whole matter with the store owner, store owner replied scamsters here spoof any no.. I asked him how can I be sure I don't have any legal case on me. He told me to call police when I asked the no. He gave me same no. 416-808-3200. We called on that no. this time it connected with actual police officer told him about the incidence. Police officer confirmed that whole thing was fake.
I was relieved and I thanked the owner of the store and then came back home.
Sharing my experience, I hope no other new immigrant will suffer such horrifying experience and will stay alert of such scams using spoofed numbers from government agencies.
