Job Description

The role of Field Technician supports the research team for all field work operations during offshore, nearshore and underwater surveys and monitoring programs.

Main responsibilities are:
  • Preparation, coordination, and management of field work operations for research studies.
  • Underwater support during scuba-diving operations for research studies.
  • Operation, deployment, calibration and maintenance of the research field equipment.
Detailed Job Scope:
  • Supports the researchers and scientists for all field work: offshore, nearshore and underwater surveys.
  • Serves as dive buddy and applies scientific underwater methodologies as instructed by the researcher team.
  • Coordinates field work logistics and scheduling.
  • Operates, deploys, calibrates, maintains, and repairs all field sampling and monitoring equipment.
  • Assists the Boat Pilot in the operation of the vessel, as needed.
  • At sea, serves as deckhand assistant being responsible for such things as engine checks, as well as running deck equipment such as winches, A-frame, and small knuckle crane.
  • Assists Boat Pilot with maintaining large research vessel, including but not limited to engines, propulsion systems, pumps, davits, winches, cranes and other gear as needed.
  • Follows and adheres to established checklists for pre- and post-dive operations.
  • Applies and supports the development and/or improvement of H&S protocols and SOPs for any field work-related operations.
  • Manages the maintenance deadlines, parts and supplies associated with all field electrical and electronics devices and sensors.
  • Works closely with the boat pilot for any technical improvements needed on the marine fleet to perform the research projects.
  • Develops technical solutions to manufacture and/or improve research field equipment and achieve objectives set by the research team.
  • Maintains parts and supplies inventory associated with all sampling, monitoring and diving equipment and consumables.
  • Supports researchers and scientists in the collection and management of scientific data from field work (surveys and monitoring).
  • Assists in sample processing and data analysis, as needed.
  • Actively contributes to the outreach goals of the YSWRRC.
  • Collaborates with SeaWorld Abu Dhabi Zoological and Education teams as required.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the YSWRRC projects by performing all other duties as assigned
To be considered for this role you, will need:

Essential:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in technical research for marine sciences.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in marine science sampling and field survey methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work at sea and in tough environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrated technical competency and interest for marine science sampling and survey equipment.
  • High interest in marine sciences and marine environmental conservation.
  • Good computer skills, including solid competencies using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to represent the Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center to community, media, government agencies, and conservation associations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to company values and safety.
  • PADI Rescue Diver, or equivalent.
  • UAE Driving License
Desirable:
  • Degree in Marine Science or Biological Science, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience in scientific diving.
  • Arabic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience in the GCC region.
  • Strong skills in use of standard machine shop tools, including welding, carpentry, fabrication.
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Evidence of multicultural skills in the workplace is an advantage.
