IELTS IDP Computer-based Test results review Tips and Tricks, Pro's and cons, How to Achieve High band 8, 9 score, IELTS Band 8, 9 Essay.

Hello friends,

I am glad to share my IELTS IDP Computer-based Test results held on 1st September at Mumbai.

Listening- 8.5
Reading- 8
Writing- 7
Speaking- 7

Preparation time
-I was collecting a lot of study materials and data from past 1month.
-Actual study time- 1 week (I know it sounds impossible but I’m afraid it’s the truth)
P.S- I am a practicing dentist and also have a 10month old baby to keep me on my toes !

I’m glad to share a few study tips which I followed.

Listening
Practiced a lot of tests from ieltsonlinetests.com.

I only did 1-2tests from Cambridge book 12.
Listening to audio on 1.25x on YouTube did not work for me as I couldn’t keep the pace and panicked. So I stuck to iot.
In the actual exam, I literally missed 5-6sentences in the conversation and was lost finding the questions. This never happened to me in the practice tests. But the exam fear got me bad !I guessed the answers and marked them as there is no negative marking.
I answered all questions in small case except nouns and first letter of the sentences in capitals.

Reading
I solved tests from Cambridge book 12 which I received after booking test date.
I vigorously followed E2 Ielts jay’s YouTube channel for his super tricks and practice sessions.
I additionally followed Liz Ielts too for reading.
For T/F/NG followed Liz specifically.

Writing
I partly followed Jay from E2 IELTS and partly Liz.
Practiced 3-4 letter writing and 7-8 essay writing on my laptop with the timer on, just to get a feel about the time management required in the exam.
My friend Pooja was a huge help in evaluating my writings.
I read all the band 7,8,9 essays and letters from Cambridge books just to know what the examiners are expecting from us !
In the actual exam,I messed up with time management and was left with hardly a minute to cross check my writings.( I used to complete my both tasks in 50mins while practicing.I guess this is what exam fear does )
I refrained from using complex vocabulary in my writings.I learned that keeping it simple is the key.A proper structure,a handful of proper and accurate cohesion and coherence (I.e connecting devices like Moreover,In addition to that,On the contrary,Furthermore, etc.) along with accurate grammar helps you achieve a 7 or more.
I thoroughly understood the marking criteria in writing section to know what exactly are we supposed to write and how.

Speaking
As I did my schooling from a convent school,I did not take speaking too seriously.
I did not practice speaking at all except the introduction part from one of Liz videos on YouTube.E.g.You have to tell your name as My name’s Esha,I’m from Mumbai, etc.
Use contractions in intro part.
Whenever I tried to practice speaking on my phone, my baby used to start babbling along with me !😂
Though I somehow let the exam fear sink in and I ended up mumbling and blanked out for a few secs in the first few questions, I managed to keep my cool and spoke upfront and fluently in the following section.
Don’t bother about the content, focus on your English.

This is my first IELTS attempt and I was pretty contented with the computer based version.

Pros-
1.Exam is done in 2.5hrs.
2.Few candidates appearing and so less exam stress.(I had heard about people saying that pbt centres are over crowded and management is also compromised)
3.Test centre- Kanakia Wall Street,Andheri,Mumbai.
It was well maintained and staff was also quite friendly.Overall management was quite good.
4.Result in 5-7days.
5.Word count in writing exam was a boon for me.There was no need to count your words as the word count at the bottom automatically tells you how many words you’ve written.
6.In reading, the passages are on the left side and the questions are on the right side.It is pretty easier to skim and scan as compared to pbt.
7.In listening, drag and drop were my favourite!

Cons-
1. In listening test, you do not get extra 10mins.So if you’re planning to give CBT practise a lot from iot and get a feel about it.
2.You cannot choose speaking slot in CBT so be free of any prior commitments 1-2days before or after the exam. You will get a mail 2days before your speaking test.

The most important tip is to follow what best suites you rather than doing what maximum people advice you to do !

I owe my heartfelt gratitude to this amazing group and it’s helping members.
Kudos to this spirit which helps us sail through !
One step at a time ! Inching towards our Canadian dream !

I am open to all your questions and queries.I will do whatever’s best in my hands to guide fellow members.
