Summary

Are you interested in contributing insights to one of the fastest growing segments of the Microsoft business? The Microsoft Security division is seeking a strong Principal UX Research Manager to join our multi-disciplinary team and lead the Data Security and Privacy team.  Our success is dependent on building and supporting teams that include people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, who can challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspective.  Our team takes our users seriously, and we are actively innovating our research practices to ensure inclusion and equity in our product making decisions.  The role’s broad scope will give you ample room to flex your design research muscles—both on projects that have immediate impact on the business as well as explorations that shape our long-term strategy, vision and UX direction. Leading and inspiring a team of researchers and growing the practice will be a key contributor to the division’s continued success. We're looking for someone that is forward-thinking and willing to challenge & provoke new ideas. This position requires strong leadership, research, storytelling, and organization skills, business acumen and the ability to work across teams. The ability to establish a strong point of view – informed by market and user level insights – and to leverage that to focus and define product strategy is a must.  In this role, you’ll use your skills in mixed methods skills as you take on complex and nuanced work to define and drive near and long-term investments. You will work closely with other UX designers, researchers, writers, data science and engineering teams to ensure that we are addressing the most critical needs and opportunities.  We’re especially looking for someone who wants to learn, grow, and embody new ways of working. Responsibilities:
  • Create research strategies that leverage existing data to complement the additional research that you need to execute. Key to this accountability will be identifying opportunities for growth, gaps and user pain points, as well as potential delighters. 
  • Define UX approaches, metrics, and work with others on research planning. Innovate and develop new approaches to measure user’s experiences. 
  • Identify stakeholders across Microsoft and bring them along as you provide the qualitative and quantitative user feedback to influence product development at different granularity, from product strategy to cross-platform coherence to feature usability. 
  • Tackle problems that require an understanding of complex technical constraints while working to guide near and long-term investments. You should have the organizational agility and acumen to know when to push against product team resistance and when to fold constraints into your recommendations. 
  • Work across organizational boundaries and across disciplines with UX Designers, other User Researchers, Data Science, Program Managers, and Engineers to ensure that we’re addressing the most critical business and technology objectives to meet the right user needs and opportunities. 
  • Develop an understanding of technical and non-technical users of Microsoft Security products to ensure we are designing solutions that meet their expectations.
  • Lead a team of IC researchers focused on driving growth across new audiences. Create clarity of purpose through scoping, alignment with stakeholders, and prioritization. Deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and caring.

  • Coach - Define team objectives and outcomes; Enable success across boundaries; Help the team adapt and learn.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 12+ years User Experience Research experience
  • OR Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 8+ years User Experience Research experience
  • OR Doctorate in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field 5+ years User Experience Research experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:

Balance business motivations, value to Microsoft and external partners  
  • You are eager to learn and understand about diverse audiences, their behaviors, context(s) and motivations – across all phases of the customer lifecycle and user journey  
  • Can demonstrate strong empathy for these users while balancing the vision and constraints of stakeholders  
Desire to work in-stride with other people:  
  • PMs, designers, other researchers, marketers     Really, you must love this part of the job.  The lines between this role and others are often unclear and you must be comfortable with contributing, engaging others despite the ambiguity   
  • Be ready to win together. This team has intentionally designed a structure where we work together.

  • You will need practical and real-world problem-solving skills, as this team moves fast, and your role will be to help unblock barriers in design, build and go-to-market
