Who you are
Virgin Galactic Medical team at Spaceport America will be supported by this position. The position will function as part of a team that determines, incorporates, and implements human health standards and requirements into the design and construction of Virgin Galactic spacecraft. This position will also be responsible for monitoring and analyzing the environmental and biomedical data associated with the spaceflight system. Engineers in Biomedical Engineering obtain technical knowledge and engage subject medical experts in human health topics as crew and space flight participant health, cabin environmental factors and limitations, anthropometry, strength and biomechanics, safety, habitability, and architecture, and biomedical devices. As a way to monitor the incorporation of human health considerations in vehicle design, the person in this position will participate in designated meetings and working groups. The Biomedical Engineer will be responsible for monitoring adherence to health and clinical requirements, ensuring that issues of unmet or insufficiently met requirements are documented, communicating the status of these issues to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and preparing materials to communicate awareness or escalate issues. As part of the position, the candidate will interact with engineering, design, and flight operations stakeholders, Virgin Galactic management, and vehicle program personnel. Human health, performance standards, and strategic processes will be improved by leveraging lessons learned.
Your Mission
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide biomedical engineering services
- As the medical and human health representative, participate in designated meetings. This includes proactively screening agendas in order to engage appropriate representatives and/or SMEs as needed, taking notes during meetings, and communicating relevant information to the engineer and design teams
- Coordinate with Medical Team, VG Operations Team, and technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
- Coordinate with VG Space Flight System Program Requirement Owners and engineering teams
- Compare industry standard requirements with VG medical standards and work to translate and update applicable standards and requirements Provide insight to program compliance with VG medical and human health standards as well as inform VG medical team decisions
- Coordination and participation in document and design reviews for the Space Flight System Program, preparation of summary assessments, and follow-up on responses
- Examine the documentation for requirements validation in the program and develop a mapping of human health standards to Program documents for gap analysis
- Identify, evaluate, and represent a medical and health perspective for program reviews based on subject matter expertise; evaluate and evaluate integrated test and analysis activities.
- Help with the selection and management of wearable biomedical devices
- Analyze and gather data from biomedical devices, cabin environments, radiation, noise, vibration, and other human health data as needed
- Prepare position papers, presentations, and/or interpretations of requirements on issues related to medical and human health
- Organize and present presentations as necessary within the medical and operations teams, the Virgin Galactic Spaceflight Program and internal teams

What you bring
Education and Experience:
- The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, biomedical science, or closely related field and 5 years’ experience (or MS and 3 years’ experience).
- Extensive experience with system integration and/or collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Working knowledge of human systems requirements and verification in the design of human spaceflight vehicles as well as experience in spaceflight operations.
Skills and Training:
- Candidate must be able to work independently as well as possess strong verbal and written communication skills, including delivering presentations and writing reports. Strong verbal skills also include speaking up during Program meetings. The candidate shall also have the capability to listen to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and to understand enough to represent their expertise, but not to serve as the expert to the exclusion of the SME. Excel is a key tool in Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of industry standards (such as NASA-STD-3001) and human space flight. At all levels, the candidate should be able to effectively interact with customers.
Physical and/or Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
- Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
- Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, maneuver and work in tight spaces
- Must be physically able to fly in a high G environment unassisted
- Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted)
ITAR Requirements:
To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. As part of our commitment to health and safety, COVID-19 vaccines are required for current U.S. teammates, as well as all newly hired employees. As of October 1, 2021, all new hires must be able to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, ( “fully vaccinated” means at least two weeks have expired since receiving the vaccination’s last dose as recommended by the manufacturer) .
