Job Description Summary

BD Interventional Surgery is a prominent researcher, manufacturer, and marketer of breakthrough, life-enhancing medical devices based in Rhode Island. Description:

This co-op will provide an opportunity to be exposed to the medical device area and provide hands-on experience working in the Research & Development department as an Engineer under direct supervision and instruction. You will contribute to design solutions and the advancement of new product development projects as a co-op in the R&D department, working with cross-functional product development teams and alongside experienced engineers. You will be able to use cutting-edge technology and attend on-site training classes. Building test samples, accumulating, analysing, and reporting operational test and research data to create performance criteria for newly designed or updated goods, processes, or materials would be the responsibility of this person. A specific product will be assigned to you.

Duties Include:
  • Undertakes and successfully completes simple or basic project/product development tasks to include any of the following: building and evaluating product prototypes, developing and writing test methods, developing and documenting new product concepts, documenting of all test results and assembly processes.
  • Attends and participates in product development meetings with representatives from Marketing, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality, and other departments.
  • Create/invent new product/process/test method concepts, designs, and techniques.
  • Simple tooling and fittings are designed, procured, and built.
  • Engineers tests and experiments are designed and coordinated.
  • Participate in the organization's sponsored innovation challenges.
  • Can communicate technical findings and outcomes to a wide range of technical experts.
  • Performs basic engineering documentation duties.
  • New processes and/or test methods should be taught to technicians and operators.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, proposes solutions, and keeps track of ideas.
  • Assigned special projects
Requirements:

In order to be eligible for the R&D Co-op position, the candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college/institution and be in good academic standing pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar field. Only students in their Sophomore year or above will be considered. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required (or 4.0 for those enrolled in programs with a 5.0 scale). The student must be available to work during session indicated. It is preferred that the candidate have a track record of leadership and/or participation in campus programs and/or community service activities. The candidate should be a driven individual with an interest in medical device development.

* This position is located in Warwick, RI and student will be required to provide his/her own transportation. Travel and housing financial assistance through BD may be available based on the circumstances.
